Jazz Boxes

Jazz boxes are the original electric guitars. As small ensembles turned into larger and larger bands with loud horn sections in the 1930s, the humble guitar got lost in the mix. Though a carved, arched top helped project the sound, it wasn't until 1931 when electromagnetic transducers (pickups) were introduced that the guitar as an instrument became a true force. While amplification evolved with solid body guitars and walls of full stacks, the original jazz archtop remains alive and well. Players such as Julian Lage, Pat Metheny and George Benson remind us of the design's beautiful capabilities, while continuing interpretations of iconic D'Angelico and Gibson designs prove our enduring love for these classics.
