This is a very early 1960-most likely a 1959 build (e.g. bumblebee capacitors), but there's no visible factory order number. It is in the A329xx range which makes it from the late winter of 60. The neck is the same as a late 59-medium at the first (.825") and fairly chunky at the 12th (.94"), not the thick '59 profile and not the wide-thin 1960's profile. Issues: The guitar comes with a factory Bigsby version. The Bigsby unit itself is a later model - probably early 70’s. You’ll note that the “Custom Made” plate is in the wrong place. It may look odd (Larry Carlton’s 335 has it in the wrong place too). There is a minor (and very old and stable) repair on the rear of the headstock. This repair is very hard to see, even with good light. I was unable to photograph it is so invisible. There is a moderate amount of finish checking which is hard to see on guitars with the natural finish. And of course the guitar has those highly-coveted PAF pickups. Original case also included in the sale which is in very good condition. Frets are not original.

bridge pickup = 7.22k ohms
neck pickup = 7.15k ohms

What seller told me when I bought the guitar:  Guitar is an early 1960 ES-335TDN in original natural blonde finish, serial number A329xx. It features 2 original “Patent Applied For” pickups with nickel plated covers and no wire nickel ABR-1 bridge and single line single ring Kluson tuners with original tips. All plastic is original including pickup surrounds, pickguard, knobs, switch tip and truss rod cover. The guitar has been re-fretted. Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with dot marker inlays. Case is original hard shell Gibson badged Stone in brown/pink interior. This guitar was originally fitted with a Bigsby. At some point a stop tailpiece was added. A Bigsby is reinstalled but it is not the original. It appears to be from the late 60’s or early 70’s. There is a very small “smile” crack at the headstock that was properly repaired more than 30 years ago and has shown no instability. Condition is 8+ /10 with moderate checking but well below average wear. Provenance: This guitar was owned for nearly 30 years by the late Alan Rogan. He was The Who’s guitar tech since the 70’s and also worked for George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Hank Marvin, Ron Wood and Keith Richards over the years. Pete Townshend played this guitar while it was owned by Alan.

From Gibson: "In the Gibson Shipping Ledger Archives the serial number A329xx shows an ES-335TDN model shipped from the Kalamazoo, MI factory on March 10, 1960."  Serial number blocked out by me. After 1960, a natural finish ES335 was only available by custom order.

This guitar is also listed for sale elsewhere.  I reserve the right of refusal if the guitar sells elsewhere first.

I do not accept returns as I don't want a guitar of such a valuable vintage to be repackaged and shipped all over the place. Ask questions before you bid. Only 88 ES335-TDN guitars were shipped in 1960.

Payment required within 24 hours of auction win. Paypal only. No post office box addresses. I prefer local pickup. I ship only to continental 48 USA states. Do not bid if you do not live in said territory. Reasonable offers accepted, but a guitar in this condition is not going out my door for much less. Guitar will be shipped with insurance.
