Acquired this one on a whim; very rare to find these in their original packaging (with the manual and power cable too) — there’s a lot of similarities between this and the Korg DVP-1. It sounds good — certainly not a SVC or a VP-330, but closer to the VP-9000 or even the Aira VT line. All of Roland’s vocal effect units have very different characteristics, so I’d recommend a quick dive into demo videos before you purchase.
Ultimately, it’s a rack-mount pitch shifter. Not particularly subtle or nuanced, but that comes with the territory. I had planned to use it in conjunction with other pitch shifters but it ended up being a bit too finicky with input level/impedance. In my experience, this is a unit that has to be at the front of your signal chain — it does not play well in fx loops or after preamps (but once again, you might be able to understand specific elements this unit that I didn’t have the patience to learn)
It does have several vocoder programs, but lacks a carrier input so it’s more of an effect than a method of synthesis (you can consult the manual for the specifics, as my interpretation of the function could be wrong)
Purchased from a professional who kept it in pristine condition. I’ve only used it a couple of times in my smoke-free/pet-free studio.
Doesn’t appear to have any wear whatsoever, aside from a couple small marks near the left ear (unnoticeable)
The display is crisp and vibrant still, restored to factory settings (though I believe that there’s also some kind of sys-ex adjacent procedure for fully restoring the patches)
It just didn’t gel with my workflow, though I’m sure it would be better suited to other styles.
Still available for local pickup in Columbus, OH
Now available to ship as well; but please be advised that it’ll arrive in the box pictured.
