Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a very unique and rare Shure Brother's 120 model carbon microphone variant based on the more common 708A crystal model microphone produced during the 1940's. This particular 120 model carbon variant utilized the exact same "Zeppelin" design metal body as the 708A with the only difference being the element utilized within. This 120 comes with the slightly newer 1950's era Atlas adjustable DS-7 model desk stand shown in which to display.

Pic # 2 shows this very model in a 1940's Shure Brother catalog and it's basic characteristics.

Again, the 708A design was based on the very popular German Zepplin's being flown around the world at that time. You can see that in the deco styling.

This is honestly the first 120 model I have ever seen so not many of these were built or sold. I contacted Shure Brothers to get more info on this microphone. This is what I was told by Michael Petterson who is well versed on these older models. He stated that he is 95% sure that the element inside is a carbon element. The element is a Shure element and has the model number stamped on the back side as seen in pic # 3. It's 100% original.

I have seen only a few of the 508 series mics with the dynamic element and they were more expensive so you see far fewer around today as they just didn't sell in the same numbers as the cheaper 708 crystal series. The 120 again, super rare and very exotic.

All 708 and 508 mics were sold with a painted body. Some having a chrome or painted lower pistol grip (like this painted one). This mic has been tested and the element no longer works but there is plenty of room inside for another crystal element or even better...a Shure controlled magnetic element. Because of the rarity of this model I would simply leave it be as you would not want to ruin the authenticity of it.

As you can see the mic itself shows a bit of wear as the original paint shows several scratches as well as scuff marks here and there with typical small paint chips but the good news is that the front grill is free of any dents and the original blue cloth screen looks good with even coloring and zero rips. The shell of the body is free of any dents as well. The joint mechanism has lots of tension so you can get just the right angle needed. The chrome lower pistol grip looks very nice with lite scuff marks. The blue label is completely legible and free of damage.

The threads for both the stand and cable are excellent. Nothing stripped.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...

The stand is a 1950's era and perfect for just about any older vintage microphone. The design, paint scheme and decal shows that it's clearly an early generation DS-7 retractable desk stand made in Brooklyn, NY.

Pic # 2 is from an older Atlas catalog showing this particular model.

Total height of stand is 12 inches high x 6 inches wide but can be lowered to 8 inches if needed?

The upper chrome stem shows lite wear in the form of fine scratches. The bottom stem shows even less wear and the Atlas logo / decal is still partially present. This model had the decal instead of the sticker and some of the decal has chipped away over the decades. There is some slight discoloration on the dark grey paint.  There are scuff marks, scratches and very lite paint loss. Still a decent looking DS-7 considering it's 70 + years old. No rust stains on the bottom of the base. Please let the detailed pics be your guide.

The locking clutch mechanism works excellent and all 3 original plastic pads are in excellent condition. This stand has the universal 5/8 thread.

This is perfect for the old 120 model mic because of it's wide, stable base and manufacture date (being 1950's). This stand is an easy 7 on a scale of 10.

The 120 with it's industrial, deco look is quite stunning on this stand and will look amazing anywhere it sits in the home, office or studio. An instant conversation piece.
