This drumkit is the quintessence of classic hard rock. The toms bear the tells of its production era, while the kicks are big and imposing--in form and in sound. It excels in live settings. It is a custom–ordered kit, most similar to the Quadra Plus Melodic Tom Outfit, but with added reinforcement rings. The double 24" 6-ply maple kicks are thunderous and boomy with plenty of low end, yet thoughtfully paired with a somewhat shallow 14" depth, lending a focused and punchy attack. Reflective of their production era, the open--reso (no resonant-side head) toms sing with spirit, projecting far and well. Poplar plies intersplice maple, for a balanced and bright sound that sings effortlessly. With just one head per rack tom, it's easy to make these drums sound great. But they really shine when tuned with intention, letting their melodic & coordinated sound ring out--whether triumphant or dissonant. I'd be happy to send them out tuned to a specific interval(s). As a versatile and serviceable default, I recommend minor thirds. This kit has some normal wear and scuffs for a kit this size, of particular note in the bass drum beater claw location. The hoop on one of the kick drums is bowed in a bit under high tension (see picture), making an imperfect circle but not to the the point where the head rumples. Thankfully it's the reso hoop, so it doesn't significantly alter or deteriorate the drum's sound, nor beater rebound at all. The kit comes with original mounting hardware, though the bass drum tightening knob that tightens down the tom boom is missing on one of the kits. I've replaced it with a thick screw of the appropriate dimensions that can be easily loosened or tightened with a hex key. This kit sounds incredible but also unique. It's presence is not just heard, but felt. Priced sometimes as high as $2,200 USED, you can buy with confidence knowing you're getting a great deal that will not be around very long. Outfitted with modern Evans EC2S heads on the toms and Aquarian Super Kick I's on the kicks, this kit ships gig-ready. It has its original Ludwig--logoed bass reso heads for style points.
