American luthier Michael Gurian’s Jumbo Rosewood (J-R) model made at the Swanzey, New Hampshire workshop in 1980/81.
The top is Sitka Spruce, with Indian Rosewood back and sides, bound in maple. The woods used in the construction of this guitar are likely to have been sourced and processed by Michael Gurian himself. A fine rope-pattern purfling borders the top, and the sound hole rosette features a herringbone center ring and wooden outer rings. The headstock is the later version with the full “Gurian” name.
Scale length measures 25.6", nut width is 1-5/8", and the neck has a comfortably rounded profile. The guitar measures 15.5" across its lower bout, and has a depth that tapers from 4-3/4" to 4-3/16". The air volume inside the box is quite substantial giving the guitar its unique tone. It has a fast-playing neck typical of Gurians, and the sustain seems to go on forever. The tone is deep and warm revealing the clarity of each note, perfect for finger picking.
This specimen is in excellent structural and cosmetic condition, without cracks, bracing repairs, or finish wear. A great playing example of an American classic.Hard shell case included. Buyer pays the shipping.
Michael Gurian was a pioneer of the small-scale-production, high quality guitar shop, and helped show the way for today's generation of boutique guitar manufacturers. After making a few guitars for himself, he set-up shop in New York City in the mid 1960's. Eventually he stopped making guitars which make this a rare find.
