About This Listing

Following in the footsteps of the 18-series orchestra models that Martin had successfully launched in the early part of the 20th Century, the D-18 came along in 1931 as part of Martin's new Dreadnought (named after the enormous 1906 battleship HMS Dreadnought) range of guitars. Apart from some minor changes to the internal bracing in the post war years, the D-18 has remained in production virtually unchanged, and has been the go to guitar for countless iconic musicians.

This example hails from 1972, and except for a very nicely done re-fret and the addition of an under-saddle pickup it is all original. It's in nice condition too, with some play related wear but nothing serious.

Construction comprises of a solid spruce top, with solid mahogany back, sides and neck. The fingerboard and bridge plate are rosewood.

No cracks and original pickguard is still intact so this is all very good!

When it comes to sound we are firmly in classic Martin dreadnought territory here, with terrific articulation, balance, and projection. It handles the low frequencies with ease, and the top end is bright and open. Playability is excellent too, the neck has a comfortable medium C profile and the action is reasonably low.

The guitar comes with a non original hard shell case.

A nice early 70's Martin, in nice condition, what's not to like? If a really good dreadnought that's ready for both the stage and the studio is on your wishlist, look no further...
