About This Listing

80’s Ludwig Tambourine
Throughout the 60’s and 70’s the construction of the Ludwig tambourines stayed fairly consistent.  In 1981 Ludwig Drums was sold to the Selmer Company and the construction of Ludwig tambourines changed.  By 1984 the wood shell and jingles (staggered) were completely redesigned.  There was a transition period when tambourine jingles of the 70’s were mixed with the newer seven-ply hardwood shells of the 80’s.  This tambourine is an example of that transition.

This instrument originally had a calf head which someone cut away but left the tacks in place. (See photo.)   I replaced the calf head with a plastic head and 9 tuning hooks which came from my other repair projects.  The wood shell, jingles, plastic head, tuning hooks and nails are all original vintage Ludwig parts.

Note: The seven-ply Selmer Ludwig tambourine shells are not as sturdy as the solid rock maple shells of the 60’s and 70’s and care should be taken to not drop these instruments.
