Introducing one of our newest modification series items, the Lin76 Limiter/compressor modifications.
Swedish Company Lindell Audio has a new kid or two (Lin2a) on the block and has entered the game of bringing back vintage designs to a modern world while making the affordable.
The Lin76 is another 1176 compressor clone, but unlike the Klark Teknik and Warm Audio units is most closely based on a Rev J version of the 76. Utilizing a Balancing driver input instead of a transformer/input attenuator. The Lin76 is a bit cleaner that other clones stock. It has a little less audio mojo due to the lack of input but as a nice warm sounding output transformer for balancing the output which is driven by a High Voltage 2n3055 which you all may know from clones like the 1073 that has spread through every audio company including the Warm Audio 76.
The design is solid, well built but is a bit dirty and grainy sounding with limited headroom and a lack of clarity for professionals.
That said it is fairly warm but does not sound PRO but is rather good for home studio use.
This is where we enter the picture as always.
The Modifications:
We pull all of the audio transistors including the output driver and replace them with High Slew rate, low noise, High performance types for better bandwidth and all of that audio goodness.
The lower quality audio caps are all pulled for Panasonic Low noise high performance parts.
Audio Coupling caps, as always in the 76, are pulled and Orange Drop caps are installed for that shimmer and 76 character.
The power supply is them tweaked with bypassing techniques for lower noise, better current delivery and more current.
When completed they really shine, much broader, more detailed, lower noise and better fidelity and musicality.
