About This Listing

This is one of the most monolithic drums we've ever produced. It is made from the absolute most luxurious and rare wood species on the planet.

This drum is made from 160 individually cut, hand arranged pieces. Every single cut was painstakingly planned and executed with precision to make for the best possible Visual and functional pattern throughout the shell..

Just to make the raw shell for this drum take several days and many dozens of hours. It's a tedious process that involves cutting, flattening, and regluing many rings until the shell is stacked up to the correct height.

Once the raw shell blank has been created, rounding of the shell can begin. The shell was turned on a large industrial lathe at approximately 14000 RPM to unnecessarily accurate Machinist tolerances. This makes for a perfectly cylindrical shell that will never go out of round and will provide absolutely perfect and effortless tuning and head contact.

Next, we cut our signature bearing edges on the shell. A .125" radius outer roundover, coupled with a 45° inner relief cut. These two cuts are performed with highly accurate machines, and then Blended by hand at their Apex to create a gentle flowing Contour that cradles your drumhead like a newborn baby.

Finally we apply our world-class high gloss lacquer finish. We use an old-school nitrocellulose based lacquer for our instruments. This is more expensive material, and harder to work with, but it provides superior results. The finishes film is much thinner and more flexible than most urethane based coatings used by other companies. This provides less of a dampening effect so the shell can resonate at its full potential, while keeping the Finish close as possible to the wood to prevent an overly thick and plastic like aesthetic.

The very last step is the hardware. We spared no expense here either. The drum has 20 solid brass tube lugs with black nickel plating, each lug has hand cut leather washers where the lug contacts the shell. The hoops on this drum are heavy duty diecast steel with black nickel plating. The drum is finished off nicely with our diecast antique silver badge.

(If you've made it this far kudos to you)

This drum represents dozens of hours of research, tedium, and artisan labor. It is our absolute joy to be able to make instruments like this and offer them to you for sale.

As with all of our drums and listings shown, when you place an order with HHG Drums, your new instrument will be hand-crafted in house, from scratch. The drum shown in the pictures was built for a customer, and now resides with them.

If you have any idea for a shell, snare, or kit- please feel free to contact us at facebook.com/hhgdrums or via our Instagram by following @hhg_drums. Custom builds are welcome, and we will do our best to build whatever it is that you can dream up!
