About This Listing

Coles 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphones - Matched Pair

The Coles 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone is of British Broadcasting design (BBC) and used for broadcasting and recording such sounds where a clear smooth wide range frequency response, absent of transient distortion and relatively high sensitivity is essential. This listing is a matched pair of Coles 4038 ribbon microphones. These include the 4069 XLR adapter only.

The 4038 has a proven reliable performance capability, being since its introduction, used by broadcasting networks throughout the world such as the BBC.

The frequency response of the 4038 is exceptionally flat from 30 to 15,000 c/s and throughout this range the shape of the bi-directional (figure of eight) polar response is maintained substantially constant both in the horizontal and vertical planes, giving a natural smooth sonic quality textured response to sound signal being picked up.

Studio microphones have now achieved a remarkable fidelity of reproduction. If the microphone is not close to perfection, there is no point in having expensive systems to take the sound the rest of the way to the audience's ears.

Product Overview
The Coles 4038 is a truly iconic ribbon microphone, with the currently-manufactured mics almost completely unchanged from the originals designed by the BBC and built by STC in the 1950s. The 4038 sports a wonderfully dark, heavy sound that lends itself particularly well to drums, guitar amps, horns and any other sound source that can benefit from a rolloff of high frequencies. The 4038 initially gained its massive popularity in recording studios after being used above Ringo Starr's kit on a huge selection of The Beatles' recordings. The swiveling "waffle iron" head houses one of the thinnest ribbon elements ever produced, and allows the engineer to fine-tune the positioning of the microphone to best capture the sound as well as make use of its deep null to cancel out unwanted bleed from other instruments.
