Korg has dropped the price of its Opsix Altered FM Synthesizer from $749 to $329—for a limited time and while supplies last. That's a 56% price drop, to be exact, on one of the coolest Korgs to come out in recent years and one of the easiest-to-explore FM synths ever.
We shot a demo of the Opsix with Natalie Chami at the Reverb studio back in November 2020, when the Opsix was first released (Natalie has since joined the team at Korg). As you can see in it, the Opsix cuts down on the confusion that sometimes comes with FM synths, and instead puts forward intuitive and accessible design features, making it a great synth for a first-timer as well as a seasoned sound designer or performer.
This synth's onboard control layout is really clean and clear, featuring sliders for volume and level and six operators that change color from pink to purple based on what function they're set to. When pink, the knobs function as your carriers (oscillators) and when purple, the knobs function as your modulators.
These change based on what algorithm you're going through—whether one of the 200 onboard presets (up to 500 can be saved) or one that you create yourself. To help inspire your creativity, there's also a "randomizer" mode that'll make total random algorithms you can play around in.
