Rebecca Faber has visited the Reverb studio before, often teaching violin players how to explore new, non-traditional aspects of their instrument like running your violin through guitar pedals, achieving cello tones with octave strings, and more.
Today, she's back to show you how to use a looper pedal—specifically, the Boss RC-300—to practice violin with pre-recorded orchestra backing tracks.
As she explains in the video above, practicing along with a full recording may not prepare you to follow the exact cue points you'll get from a conductor in a live performance. Therefore, Faber cuts up each section of a piece, and is then able to trigger each section individually while she practices.
Of course, this method is not bound to violins and orchestral accompaniment alone, but can also be used to practice alongside any type of piece.
